Start Early Childhood Education with PowerFlashCard
Two-minute Sessions

I run Math, Reading and Picture in one session. For each subject, I run no more than 30 seconds of contents. So one session lasts no more than two minutes. I highly recommend adjust the laps according to your child's attention span. Stop before the child's attention wears out. Keep in mind, it is important keeping the session fun.

For math, I started with single number dot flashcards with no signs. First I show dot flashcards in order, and ten flashcards in one session. Later, I show ten random dot flashcards. I set interval to one second. Then, I move to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with dots and show signs. The next step is to show number and dot flashcards to teach numerals. I do, for example, dot 9 equals numeral 9. With PowerFlashCard, I enter &9=9; select option show numerals, show signs, and show singles. Finally, I show whole equations.

For reading, I group words of one subject, adjust the font size to fit one word per screen, and let it run with voice. Later, I put sentences of one subject. Make sure to pre-run the session before teaching your child to ensure the correct font size and check the voice quality. The alternative to the synthesized voice is to read out loud yourself.

I have put some of my teaching materials up for download.

Here are some tips of using PowerFlashCard. The following tips of using PowerFlashCard are from my very own experience of working with my daughter. She went by stages noticeably.

Baby age 0-6 months:
At this stage, the baby is not quite mobile. Flash math dots with voice
randomly, flash colorful pictures randomly to stimulate baby's visual
sense. Paintings from the master of color Matisse are great for this purpose. I also used some impressionist paintings I loved as well.

Baby age 6 months - 12 months:
At this stage, the baby starts to grab everything in the way. Sit the baby
a foot away from the computer, so she can not bang on the keyboard, or fight for the control of mouse. If the baby is too busy with the surroundings than paying attention to the computer screen, stop using the program for a while. Use alternative methods, such as showing her pictures in the book. She will fight to eat the book, too. But never stop learning.

Baby age 12 months and up:
At this stage, the baby starts to have communication with parents. He can
sit still for a little while, and he does not put everything in his mouse
as much as he used to. He says some words, such as "dada", "mommy". Use PowerFlashCard to make words "daddy; mommy", or use daddy and mommy's pictures to flash. That way, it links the word he says with the word itself, as well as links the word with the subject that he is familiar with. I found it very effective on my daughter. Among her first words are moon, sun, apple, ball, balloon, frog, leaves, wine, leash, buddy (our dog), fish, bee, turtle etc.

Once the baby has grasped the idea of written words, you can go all out
with PowerFlashCard. One day, when you find that your baby can categorize things, you can apply encyclopedic knowledge method by Dr. Glenn Doman. To put it simply, it's a way to categorize words or pictures you present to your baby. For example, under the knowledge of biology, you can have a category of mammal, under mammal, you can have cat, dog, tiger, dolphin, elephant and etc. However, you don't have to categorize everything. According to studies, the ability to logically reason is not developed until after six years old. Before six, the main task is to give the baby snap shoots of as much information as possible for her photographic memory dominated brain. Let the baby to connect the dots as he grows, so to speak.

Happy learning.
